FAQs
What is Screenprinting?
Screenprinting or Silkscreening is a technique used to transfer an image to paper. It's really easy once you get the hang of it, and it's cheap and doesn't involve too much to set up a "studio" at home. Click here to download my instructions.
What is Pushmepullyou Design?
Pushmepullyou Design is run by Eleanor Grosch in Philadelphia, PA. Founded in 2003, the studio has produced design work for varied applications while always staying true to the original pursuit of creating screenprints and band posters.
What's a "Pushmepullyou?"
The Pushmepullyou is Dr.Dolittle's two-headed llama.
How did you get started?
After graduating from the University of South Florida with a degree in Fine Art, Eleanor was looking for a way to get some portfolio work. A boyfriend recommended making band posters for a local promoter. She saw the gigposters.com site around that time and fell in love. So, she started posting her work, and after a while started getting job offers.
When Eleanor moved to Philadelphia in 2005 she couldn't find a job that suited her, so she worked on securing freelance clients. Now she gets to do what she loves for a living!
Do you have any advice for young artists?
Contact your local show promoter or venue and ask if they need posters for upcoming shows. You might have to work for free at first, but if you post your work to gigposters.com, the rewards will come later in the form of paying jobs.
What/who are your influences?
From a young age, Eleanor drew animals. She drew them at home, she drew them in school, she drew them on vacation, in the car, when she was sick, whenever she could. She rarely drew people; there was just something special about animals that held her interest and continues to do so.
Eleanor rarely drew backgrounds either. She kept it simple with line work on a blank field. Sometimes she would color them in, but mostly it was the shape of the line that was the reward. She started simplifying that line and bringing more geometry into her work when she was exposed to Skateboard artwork on Alien Workshop and Habitat decks.
Once she started illustrating and eventually worked with Alien Workshop (a dream come true!!), she found out about Charley Harper, a kindred spirit in the pursuit of simplifying animal artwork. Eleanor feels that Charley is the mentor she never knew she had! He's a hero.
Other design heros include Dirk Fowler, Tord Boontje, Marimekko, Lucienne Day, Ryan McGinness, Methane Studios, Jeff Kleinsmith, Sanna Annukka and so many others.
Do you print your own work?
Yes, Eleanor prints all of her work by hand in her studio. All prints are 12.5 by 19" unless otherwise noted.
What type of paper do you print on?
All Pushmepullyou Design prints are printed on 80-100lb French Paper. We use French Paper because of the lovely muted tones and quality.
